Distraction Burglary in Bilston

Alert message sent 20/11/2019 16:10:00

Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

Dear Residents of Bilston,

You may or may not be aware that there has been a trend within the West Midlands area of Distraction Burglaries. Quite often targeting the elderly.

West Midlands Police have been proactively negating the issue, and have made a number of arrests, which has resulted in some offenders being charged. Due to police activity the number of Distraction Burglaries has been less over the last month, however most recently this week there has been an Elderly person targeted, by 3 white males in the Portobello area of Bilston. These men were claiming to be builders and stated they had come to fix the residents shed roof.

The Modus Operandi for the incident, was as follows: Two of the men kept the attention of the resident in his living room, whilst the third male went up stairs and stole a substantial amount of money before leaving the resident, who later discovered the burglary had taken place.

We hope this is an isolated incident, however its imperative that residents of Bilston are aware that this activity has taken place. There are a few relative precautions you can take. Before answering the front door make sure your back door and windows are locked. If someone states they are from a particular company such as the water board, or asking to read the gas and electric metres. Be sure to ask for identification and the phone number of the respective company to reduce the potential risk. If unsure of the intentions of the visitor, a good tip is to speak to the individual from a first floor window.

Remember that you do not have to let anyone in your house, if you feel unsure, trust your instincts. Call the police, you will never been criticised if the person has legitimate intentions. Your safety is paramount.

Kind Regards PSCO 31628 David Jones
