Bogus callers distraction burglaries

Alert message sent 19/07/2019 16:45:00

Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

Dear Residents of the Bilston area,

Quite often we receive reports of criminals pro-porting to be staff, workers or employees of such companies like the Water board, Gas Board, a Police Officer or a fireman.

These people often try to exploit the vulnerable or the elderly and in many cases can be very convincing. They will often have an identification card which may appear to be in itself convincing, however I suggest unless you are absolutely certain, to make a quick phone call to the relevant company they claim to represent and ask the company to verify if they are calling at your property legitimately and that they are recognised as employees and are their for the right reasons. If you are still unsure, don't hesitate on calling the Police, you won't be criticised, we are more concerned about your safety.

Remember that unless they can provide fact that they are who they say they are, or their company can verify this for you via a phone call, you do not have to let these people in your property.

If they're confirmed not to be who they say they are, call 999 and make the police aware that you think these people are looking to commit a distraction burglary, providing the call handler with all the information you have.

Please make sure that if you have or know friends, family or any vulnerable person that they are made aware of this activity and that precautions are put in place to protect and assist them.

The reason that I have sent this message is to do with the below paragraph which is a case that has recently occurred close to our area and for you to be aware of these people

Three males who as of yet are unknown have entered a victims flat while carrying a wooden pole and stated that they from the Waterboard, these males had their faces covered. Due to the fact they claimed to be employees of the Water Board the victim has allowed them access to his property. The offenders have made an untidy search in one of the victims bedrooms and also his living room. This victim confronted the male suspects and one of them threatened him with the wooden pole. The offenders made off with £600 cash.

I don't want to frighten people but feel you must be aware this is happening. If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please message me back, I'll do all I can to help.

Kind regards PCSO 31005 Gavin chandler, Bilston Neighbourhood Police Team
